mansoor ennals award

Geneva, October 6, 2015

Mr. Ahmed Mansoor, the prominent Emirati human rights defender, won the 2015 Martin Ennals Award during the ceremony hosted by the City of Geneva, at Uni-Dufour on October 6, 2015. This international recognition is a living proof that Mr. Mansoor like other human rights defenders who fight in their own countries are not forgotten and that their voices strongly resonate.  By assigning the prize to a prominent Emirati human rights activist, the jury reiterated a message of solidarity and support to all those who put their lives at risk to promote and protect human rights in the Gulf region, mainly in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The Martin Ennals Award highlights human rights violations in the UAE. Now, everybody knows that in the UAE,  which is ironically a member of the Human Rights Council, authorities apply double standards and impose travel ban to Ahmed Mansoor.

We recall that Mr. Mansoor was one of the “UAE 5” group, which was arrested in 2011 by Emirati authorities. Since 2006, he shed the light on issues such as freedom of expression, civil and political rights. Mr. Mansoor raises awareness about arbitrary detention, torture, unfair trials, partiality of the judiciary, and domestic Emirati laws that do not comply with the international standards. He was jailed in 2011 and since then he has been denied a passport, hence the right to freedom of movement.

The ICJHR supports Mr. Mansoor as he has a prominent role providing a credible and independent assessment of human rights situation within the UAE. We are pleased to congratulate him for the prize that reflects his bravery and sacrifice. Today, we are full of hope that this Award will be a positive turning point toward a radical improvement of human rights situation in the UAE as well as the Gulf region.

The ICJHR congratulates Mr. Mansoor, all the human rights defenders in the UAE and all the oppressed people in jails or outside.
